For over four decades, Patrick Duffy was one half of a Hollywood love story that quietly endured the spotlight. Best known for his roles on Dallas and Step by Step, the actor spent 43 years married to his soulmate, ballerina Carlyn Rosser — a partnership that grounded him through career highs and unimaginable personal lows.
When Carlyn passed away unexpectedly in 2017, Duffy’s world shattered.
The pain of losing the woman he called “his everything” was overwhelming. “I can still hear her. I can see her. I know what she would expect of me,” he once shared, revealing how deeply her presence lingered in his everyday life.
Their story began in the early 1970s, when Duffy, a young actor with big dreams, met Carlyn, a graceful, accomplished dancer ten years his senior. They fell in love quickly, united not only by passion but by their shared Buddhist beliefs, which would become a guiding force through their life together. They married in 1974 and raised two sons, nurturing a family that valued creativity, faith, and connection.
The couple faced more than their fair share of hardships. In 1986, Patrick’s parents were murdered during a robbery at their Montana bar — a tragedy that shook the actor to his core. Through it all, Carlyn remained his constant, his anchor. “She supported every part of my life. I was who I was because of her,” he once said.

So when she was gone, Duffy didn’t think he could ever feel whole again.
But life had a surprising twist in store.
In the early days of the pandemic, Duffy joined a group text with some old friends, including actress Linda Purl, known for her roles in Happy Days and The Office. What started as a casual connection soon turned into nightly Zoom conversations — deep, honest, and filled with laughter. Over time, something unexpected bloomed.
“I never thought for a minute this would happen again,” Duffy admitted. “But Linda and I just kept talking, and suddenly we realized—we didn’t want to stop.”
After months of virtual connection, Duffy drove 20 hours to see her in person. “The moment we were together, it was like we’d never been apart,” he recalled. From that point on, they were inseparable.

Their love wasn’t rushed — it was seasoned with the patience and wisdom of experience. Both had lived full lives, both had loved and lost, and now, they found joy in each other’s company, in their shared artistic spirits, and in the quiet comfort of being understood.
In 2021, the couple even brought their chemistry to the screen, portraying a married couple in a made-for-TV film — a special first for Duffy, who had never acted alongside a partner before. “To share the set with someone who gets you, both personally and professionally, was truly magical,” he said.
Duffy has since spoken publicly about the peace he’s found with Linda by his side. While his love for Carlyn remains eternal, he believes she would want this for him. “She’d want me to be happy,” he said. “She’d want me to love again.”
His story has resonated with fans everywhere — a powerful reminder that grief is not the end of the road. Love, even after great loss, is still possible. And sometimes, the heart finds a way to heal when you least expect it.

Patrick Duffy’s journey is proof that second chances can come at any age. That even in your seventies, life can offer you something new — a hand to hold, a laugh to share, a reason to smile again.
And as he walks this new chapter with Linda Purl by his side, Duffy does so carrying the love of his past and the promise of his present — showing us all that while we never stop missing the ones we’ve lost, there’s always room in the heart to begin again.
