Sixteen years ago, Thomas Beatie made history as the world’s first legally recognized man to give birth. His groundbreaking journey to parenthood challenged societal norms and ignited a global conversation about gender and reproductive rights. Now, more than a decade later, Beatie continues to navigate life as a father, husband, and advocate, reflecting on the legacy of his trailblazing story.
A Life-Altering Journey
Born in 1974 in Hawaii as Tracy Lehuanani LaGondino, Thomas Beatie’s journey toward his true identity began early. By the age of ten, he already identified as a boy, and at 23, he started testosterone therapy, embracing his transgender identity. His determination and resilience were evident even in his younger years—he was a model, a finalist in the Miss Hawaii Teen USA pageant, and an accomplished martial artist, winning a junior championship in Taekwondo at the 1992 Aloha State Games.
In 2002, he underwent gender-affirming surgery to remove his breasts and legally changed his sex marker from female to male on state and federal identification documents. However, he made a crucial decision—to retain his female reproductive organs, unknowingly setting the stage for his historic pregnancy years later.

The Pregnancy That Shocked the World
In 2006, Thomas and his then-wife, Nancy, faced fertility struggles. In a bold and unprecedented move, he halted his testosterone therapy, deciding to carry their child himself. Two years later, in 2008, an iconic image of Thomas sporting a pregnant belly made global headlines. Dubbed “the pregnant man” by media outlets, he became the first documented transgender man to give birth.
His pregnancy was far from easy. The couple faced intense discrimination, with doctors refusing treatment, healthcare professionals misgendering him, and friends and family members turning away. Hate mail and death threats flooded in, yet Thomas remained resolute in his belief that parenthood was a fundamental human right, regardless of gender.
“Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Healthcare professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife,” he revealed in interviews.
Despite the backlash, Thomas successfully gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Susan, after a grueling 48-hour labor. His case became the first known instance of a legally recognized man giving birth within a marital union with a woman.

Expanding the Family
Over the next five years, Thomas went through four more pregnancies—one of which resulted in an ectopic pregnancy. Together, he and Nancy raised their three children—Susan, Austin, and Jensen—presenting themselves as a traditional family with strong values. Their story continued to gain international attention, and in April 2008, Thomas appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where he shared his perspective on parenthood.
“It’s not a male or female desire to want to have a child; it’s a human desire. I’m a person, and I have the right to have my own biological child,” he stated, pushing back against those who questioned his decision.
A New Chapter
In 2016, Thomas married his second wife, Amber, after finalizing his tumultuous divorce from Nancy. The couple had known each other since 2012, but legal battles delayed their union. Together, they moved to Oregon, blending their families, including Susan, Austin, Jensen, and Amber’s grandchild, Lily.
“It can get pretty loud with four kids aged 3, 5, 6, and 7, but we love it,” Thomas shared in an interview with Daily Mail.
Although he no longer lives in the public spotlight as he once did, Thomas continues to make occasional appearances in the media and on social platforms. Today, he works as a stockbroker in Phoenix, Arizona, balancing his career with family life. His older children divide their time between his home and their mother’s, who lives just ten miles away.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Reflecting on the whirlwind of attention he received 16 years ago, Thomas acknowledges the impact of his story on the world’s understanding of transgender issues.
“When my story came out, there wasn’t a single person in the public eye as a transgender man—most people had never heard of it,” he said. “This was pre-Chaz Bono. This was pre-Caitlyn Jenner. This was before anyone knew anything. It was a first exposure for a lot of people. And then, on top of that, they can give birth! I think exposing the importance of fertility for trans people was a huge eye-opener.”
Even now, Thomas still occasionally takes on public-speaking engagements and small acting opportunities, but he mostly enjoys a quiet life with his family.
“Everything was a whirlwind,” he recalled. “But I still don’t regret it.”
Thomas Beatie’s journey remains one of resilience, courage, and an unwavering commitment to living authentically. His experience has not only paved the way for greater awareness and acceptance of transgender individuals but has also challenged traditional perceptions of gender, family, and parenthood. And while his story may no longer dominate headlines, his impact on history is undeniable.
