Dad Refuses to Leave Behind Son in Wheelchair, Both Killed by LA Fire

In a heartbreaking tragedy, Anthony Mitchell and his son Justin, both wheelchair users, lost their lives in the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. The father and son were among at least 24 people who perished in the blaze, leaving their family and community in mourning.

A Father’s Unwavering Love

Anthony Mitchell, 68, was a devoted father of four. On January 8, as flames engulfed their Altadena neighborhood, Mitchell and Justin, 31, were unable to evacuate due to their physical limitations. Justin had cerebral palsy and required constant care, while Mitchell himself was an amputee reliant on a prosthetic leg.

Despite the imminent danger, Mitchell refused to leave without his son. His eldest son, Anthony Jr., explained:

“He wasn’t going to leave my brother. He would never leave his kids. We were his legacy. We were his diamonds.”

Mitchell had called for assistance but no help arrived in time. He reassured his daughter Hajime, 50, during a phone call that help was on the way. “They’ll get me and your brother,” he told her, moments before flames overtook their home.

A Last Conversation

In their final exchange, Mitchell told Hajime, “Baby, I got to go. The fire just got in the yard.” That evening, both Mitchell and Justin were found deceased in their home, consumed by the Eaton Fire.

Hajime, devastated by the loss, reflected on her father’s love and dedication. “A father’s love for his children is truly special,” she wrote on social media, sharing cherished memories of her dad’s unwavering support and pride in his family.

A Family Left Searching for Answers

Mitchell’s family is now grappling with questions about why emergency assistance failed to arrive. “Where was the ambulance? Where were the caregivers?” Hajime asked, frustrated by the lack of resources during the critical moments.

According to Carlos Herrera, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, emergency teams were stretched thin due to the simultaneous Palisades and Eaton fires. “All resources were already dedicated to the raging Palisades fire across town,” Herrera explained.

A Community in Mourning

The Altadena community, where Mitchell lived for over 20 years, is mourning the loss of a man known for his kindness and dedication to his family. Neighbors and friends have expressed their sorrow and support for the grieving family.

Anthony Jr. highlighted his father’s deep commitment to family: “Even though he had a missing leg, he could have gotten himself out. But he wasn’t going to leave my brother. He believed in family, and I think that’s one of the reasons it cost him his life.”

California Wildfires: A Growing Crisis

The Eaton Fire is part of a series of wildfires that have ravaged California, destroying over 12,000 structures and burning more than 60 square miles. Fire officials have warned of “extremely critical fire weather” conditions, with strong winds and low humidity fueling the flames.

The California Fire Department has urged residents to remain vigilant, stating: “Much of Southern California — from San Luis Obispo to San Diego — is at significant risk of rapid fire spread. One less spark equals one less wildfire.”

A Legacy of Love

Anthony Mitchell’s story is one of unwavering love and sacrifice. His actions reflect the profound bond between a parent and child, even in the face of unimaginable danger. As his family seeks answers and mourns their loss, Mitchell’s legacy will be remembered as one of love, dedication, and resilience.
