For years, rumors have swirled that Shia LaBeouf “knocked out” co-star Tom Hardy during the filming of their 2012 movie Lawless. The speculation grew to the point where LaBeouf finally felt compelled to set the record straight.
Hardy himself had joked in past interviews about the alleged altercation, claiming he was “knocked out” by LaBeouf. However, LaBeouf dismissed these stories as nothing more than playful exaggeration during a 2019 appearance on Hot Ones.
What Really Happened Between LaBeouf and Hardy?
LaBeouf explained that the supposed incident arose from the two actors’ off-screen camaraderie, which often involved roughhousing. Hardy, preparing for his role as the physically intimidating Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, was in peak physical condition at the time.
“We used to wrestle all the time,” LaBeouf said. “Tom’s a big f***ing person, especially then. One day, after a gym session, he ran into my room unannounced.”

The impromptu wrestling match began, catching LaBeouf off-guard.
“He picked me up—mind you, I had nothing on—threw me over his shoulder, and we wrestled in the hallway,” LaBeouf recounted. His then-girlfriend, alarmed by the chaos, fled the scene.
Although the incident was all in good fun, Hardy later spread the playful story that LaBeouf had “knocked him out.” LaBeouf clarified, “It was all BS. He was just messing with everyone on set.”
A Career of Highs and Lows
At the time of his Hot Ones interview, LaBeouf was enjoying a resurgence in Hollywood thanks to his critically acclaimed autobiographical film Honey Boy. The movie, which LaBeouf wrote and starred in, explored his tumultuous upbringing and his relationship with his father.
However, LaBeouf later revealed that parts of Honey Boy were fictionalized for dramatic effect. “My dad never hit me,” he confessed in an interview with Jon Bernthal, adding, “I turned the knob up on certain things that weren’t real.”
Despite his talent, LaBeouf’s career has been overshadowed by personal controversies, including a lawsuit from ex-partner FKA Twigs, who accused him of abuse. These allegations led to a period of professional exile.

A Hollywood Return Amid Controversy
LaBeouf recently re-entered the spotlight with a role in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. The film’s casting made headlines as Coppola brought together actors from diverse—and sometimes contentious—backgrounds, including LaBeouf and Jon Voight, an outspoken conservative.
Coppola defended his decision, stating: “I didn’t want this film to be seen as a woke Hollywood lecture. We had people who were canceled and others who were politically polarizing. But we worked together as one cast.”
The Legacy of the “Fight”
The myth of Shia LaBeouf knocking out Tom Hardy may have been debunked, but it endures as a quirky Hollywood anecdote. For LaBeouf, it’s another chapter in his tumultuous yet fascinating career, marked by both brilliance and controversy.
