He developed a passion for animals early in life, working on a San Fernando Valley ranch where he helped train animals for movies. His bond with wildlife laid the foundation for his future stardom.
Haggerty’s robust physique and adventurous spirit made him a natural fit for Hollywood. He began as a stuntman and set builder before transitioning to acting. His experience with animals brought him work as a trainer for Disney films, where he handled everything from white tigers to wild boars. Despite his professional success, Haggerty’s personal life was marred by tragedy. In 1984, he faced a career setback after being arrested for cocaine possession, which led to a 90-day jail sentence. That same year, his first marriage to Diane Rooker ended in divorce after 25 years. Haggerty eventually found love again, marrying Samantha Hilton, with whom he had three children.
However, heartbreak struck in 2008 when Samantha died in a freak motorcycle accident after colliding with a deer. She was not wearing a helmet, and the crash left her with severe brain damage. Haggerty, who was golfing in Florida at the time, rushed to her side but was forced to make the painful decision to remove her from life support.
“It was the hardest, most heartbreaking decision I’ve ever had to make,” Haggerty later said. “I wept like a child.”

In August 2015, Haggerty was diagnosed with spinal cancer after doctors discovered a tumor during back surgery. Though he fought bravely, the disease claimed his life on January 15, 2016, at the age of 74.

According to his best friend, Terry Bomar, Haggerty remained positive and full of gratitude. “He had a great Thanksgiving, he had a great Christmas, and a decent New Year,” Bomar recalled. During their last conversation, Haggerty shared his enduring love: “I told him I loved him, and the last words I heard him say were, ‘I love you.’”
