Jada Pinkett Smith Admits to Affair with August Alsina, Opens Up About Marriage Struggles

Jada Pinkett Smith, a prominent American actress, singer, and talk show host, has once again made headlines after opening up about a past affair with hip-hop and R&B singer August Alsina. Known for films such as The Nutty Professor, Girls Trip, and the Madagascar series, Jada’s personal life has come under public scrutiny over the years, especially due to her marriage to Hollywood icon Will Smith.

The couple, married since 1997, share two children, Jaden (26) and Willow (23), and have faced several public controversies, most notably the infamous 2022 Oscars incident where Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage. However, Jada’s admission of an affair in 2020 became one of the most talked-about moments in their relationship’s history.

The Red Table Talk Revelation

In an episode of Red Table Talk, Jada’s Facebook show, she sat down with Will Smith to discuss their relationship and revealed her “entanglement” with August Alsina. This affair occurred while Jada and Will were going through a rough patch in their marriage, and the actress explained that her relationship with Alsina started as an attempt to help him with his health and mental well-being.

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith’s marriage has been heavily scrutinized in the media

“It all started with him just needing some help,” Jada said. “Me wanting to help his health, his mental state. The outpouring for him from our family was initially about his health… but you and I were going through a very difficult time.”

She emphasized that the affair occurred during a period when she and Will had separated amicably, clarifying that no one but her could give “permission” for such a relationship. She also defended Alsina, insisting that he wasn’t a homewrecker.

Marriage Under Public Scrutiny

The couple’s marriage has long been the subject of media speculation, especially following Will Smith’s Oscars controversy. The incident, which saw Will slapping Chris Rock after a joke about Jada’s shaved head (a result of her battle with alopecia), dominated global headlines. Despite winning the Best Actor award that night, the slap overshadowed his career milestone and led to his 10-year ban from the Academy Awards.

However, Jada and Will have faced deeper challenges. In 2023, Jada made a surprising admission that she and Will had been living “completely different” lives since 2016. Speaking with Hoda Kotb in an NBC primetime special, she revealed that while they had not divorced, they were navigating their relationship in an unconventional way.

Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars when the comedian joked about Jada Pinkett Smith.

“I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce,” Jada said. “We will work through whatever. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”

Will, too, addressed their relationship in an email to The New York Times, reflecting on how being together for more than half their lives had caused “emotional blindness” and a loss of sensitivity to each other’s subtle changes.

A Unique Bond

Despite their ups and downs, Jada and Will’s commitment to each other remains steadfast. In a separate interview with People magazine, Jada described how they are still working on their relationship, stating, “We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”

As Jada and Will continue to navigate their complex and highly publicized relationship, their story remains a testament to the challenges and resilience of long-term partnerships, especially under the intense pressure of the spotlight.
