Ricki Lake Needs Our Prayers: A Brave Battle with Alopecia and Mental Health

It is challenging to forget the infamous 2022 Oscars incident in which actor Will Smith struck comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her shaved head. Due to alopecia, Pinkett Smith has been shaving her head since 2021. The event brought global attention to alopecia, a condition that affects millions, including talk show host and actor Ricki Lake.

Ricki Lake, a beloved figure in the entertainment industry, has been candid about her struggles with hair loss. For over 30 years, she battled feelings of self-consciousness and despair, even contemplating suicide due to the emotional toll of her thinning hair. Lake, now 54, has been open about her journey, hoping to inspire others facing similar challenges.

Lake revealed that she suffers from androgenetic alopecia, a hereditary condition that causes severe thinning and male-pattern baldness in both men and women. This condition has deeply affected her, both personally and professionally. On Instagram, she shared an emotional photo of her shaved head, captioned with heartfelt words about her experience: “It has been crippling, embarrassing, painful, scary, depressed, lonely, all the things. I have even occasionally had suicidal thoughts as a result of it. Nobody in my life really understood the severity of the trauma and excruciating pain I was going through.”

Her honesty about the condition sheds light on the often-overlooked emotional impact of hair loss. For Lake, the journey began after her breakthrough role as Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 film “Hairspray.” To achieve the iconic 1960s bouffant hairstyle for her character, her delicate, virgin hair was extensively treated over two weeks, which severely stressed her hair follicles. This triggered a condition known as telogen effluvium, causing her hair to thin significantly.

Lake’s hair loss was further exacerbated by drastic weight changes, depression, hormonal imbalances, and the use of hair extensions to conceal her thinning hair. Desperate to restore her hair, she tried numerous treatments, including Rogaine, topical treatments, steroid injections, PRP therapy (plasma injections into the scalp), and the prescription medication Propecia, which specifically targets androgenetic alopecia. Unfortunately, none of these treatments proved effective.

During the years she hosted her daytime tabloid talk show from 1993 to 2004, Lake faced immense pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards. Millions of viewers watched her both in the studio and at home, and the scrutiny was intense. Despite her professional success, the personal toll was significant.

Beyond her talk show, Lake is well-known for her roles in films such as “Cry-Baby” (1990) with Johnny Depp and “Mrs. Winterbourne” (1996) alongside Shirley MacLaine and Brendan Fraser. She also appeared on television, notably as Doug’s sister in “King of Queens.” Additionally, Lake has made her mark as a documentary filmmaker and appeared on reality shows like “The X Factor: Celebrity” and “Masked Singer,” ensuring she remained in the public eye.

In 2012, Lake attempted to revive her former talk show with “The Ricki Lake Show,” which earned her a Daytime Emmy but was only renewed for one season. Despite this setback, she continued to be a prominent figure in entertainment.

Lake’s personal life has also been marked by tragedy. In 2017, her ex-husband, jewelry designer Christian Evans, committed suicide. They were married from 2012 to 2015, and Lake described their relationship as deeply loving. His death profoundly affected her, plunging her into a deep depression. She told People magazine, “I actually had depression. It was worrisome when I was unable to leave my bed at certain points. Since I tend to be an upbeat person, not feeling that way paralyzed me.”

Given the immense stress she faced in both her personal and professional lives, it is no surprise that her hair continued to fall out. The cumulative pressures took a toll on her mental health, amplifying the challenges posed by her alopecia.

In a candid 2022 interview with People, Lake admitted, “I was afraid of coming out because I was aware of no female discussing female baldness in public.” Her bravery in sharing her story aims to break the silence surrounding female hair loss and provide support to others enduring similar struggles.

Ricki Lake’s journey is a poignant reminder of the hidden battles many face. Her openness about her struggles with alopecia and mental health serves as a beacon of hope for those dealing with similar issues. As she continues to advocate for awareness and support, she reminds us all of the importance of compassion and understanding.

Lake’s story is not just about hair loss; it’s about resilience, vulnerability, and the power of sharing one’s truth. As she navigates her journey, Ricki Lake needs our prayers and support, embodying strength and courage in the face of adversity.
