Sun-Kissed Days: A Replay of a Summer at the Caspian Shore in 1970s Iran

The Caspian Sea, a turquoise gem nestled between Iran and the Eurasian Steppe, thrummed with a different kind of energy in the 1970s. Unburdened by the restrictions that would follow the Islamic Revolution, Iranians flocked to its shores for a taste of freedom and leisure.

Imagine this: the year is 1976. The sun hangs high in a cloudless sky, casting a warm glow over the golden sands of Ramsar, a popular Caspian resort town. The rhythmic whoosh of waves crashing against the shore provides a constant soundtrack, punctuated by the excited shrieks of children building sandcastles.

Stylish women in colorful miniskirts and oversized sunglasses relax on beach mats, their laughter mingling with the clinking of ice against glasses of cool doogh, a refreshing yogurt-based drink.

Men, some sporting aviator sunglasses and straw hats, play volleyball with youthful enthusiasm. The air is thick with the sweet aroma of melting snow cones, a favorite beachside treat.

A day at the beach in Iran, before the Islamic Revolution (1970s).

Beach vendors weave through the crowds, balancing precariously on wicker baskets overflowing with glistening peaches, sun-ripened tomatoes, and glistening fish. The scent of sizzling kebabs from nearby stalls wafts through the air, a tempting invitation for those seeking a more substantial meal.

As the afternoon sun dips lower, casting long shadows on the sand, families gather around picnic baskets, sharing laughter and stories. The lull of the sea takes over, washing away the worries of everyday life. Teenagers steal shy glances at each other, their cheeks flushed with the warmth of the sun and the thrill of newfound independence. The day winds down with a vibrant scene.

Beachgoers stroll along the water’s edge, their silhouettes outlined against the fiery hues of the setting sun. The last rays paint the sky in a dazzling display of orange, pink, and purple, a breathtaking backdrop for this idyllic scene.

This was the essence of a summer day at the Caspian shore in pre-revolution Iran – a time of carefree leisure, social connection, and a sense of hope for the future. A stark contrast to the stricter social codes that would soon be implemented.
