Digital Learning: A Historical Journey through Computer Classes

Computer classes, as we know them today, have a history that is closely tied to the development of the computer itself. The roots of computer education can be traced back to a time when these remarkable machines were in their infancy. This narrative takes us on a journey through the origins of computer classes and how they have evolved over the years.

In the early 20th century, computers were largely massive, room-filling machines that were far from accessible for the average person. These early computers were primarily used for complex scientific and military calculations. In fact, the term “computer” originally referred to a human who performed calculations by hand.

However, as technological advancements were made in the mid-20th century, electronic computers began to take shape, setting the stage for the eventual inclusion of computer classes in education.

The first real computers emerged during World War II when scientists and engineers were seeking ways to improve their calculations, particularly for military purposes. The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), built at the University of Pennsylvania, is often considered one of the earliest electronic computers.

It was a massive machine that required a team of operators to rewire it for different calculations. The concept of a computer class was unimaginable at this stage.

The 1950s saw the development of the first commercially available computers, which were still prohibitively expensive for educational institutions. Mainframes, such as the UNIVAC I and IBM 701, were used by large corporations, government agencies, and research institutions for data processing and scientific calculations.

In the 1960s, computers began to get smaller and more affordable. These “mini-computers” paved the way for the expansion of computer usage. Logo was particularly famous for its use of a “turtle” that could be programmed to draw shapes, making it a powerful educational tool for teaching programming concepts to children. This marked a pivotal moment in the early efforts to bring computers into educational settings.

However, it was not until the 1970s and early 1980s that personal computers (PCs) began to appear. The Apple II and the IBM PC were among the first wave of PCs that started to make their way into homes and educational institutions.

These smaller and more affordable machines were still relatively expensive, but they represented a significant shift in the availability of computers. It was during this period that the concept of computer classes in schools began to take root.
